A Free Mixed Media Tutorial

Hello lovelies! How's it going? Hope all is well in your part of the world!

In the past couple of weeks, I've had the most amazing opportunities to meet some on my online friends in real life! I am continually amazed at the beautiful and real connections that form over the internet and the wonderful opportunities that emerge from those connections!

One online friend I would love to meet, is the fabulous Donna Downey! You can imagine how honored I was when she asked me to create a Mixed Media Tutorial for her blog! Woo! So fun! She featured it a few weeks back but I wanted to share it with you guys too, in case you missed it.

This piece is called "Into the Light" and it is a process of stenciling, paint, collage and encaustic wax! And yes, even some sculpture. I hand made her wings with paper, wire and wax.

You can watch the entire process of me creating this OVER HERE!

I hope you enjoy! My plan for the New Year is to create more of these free projects. I'm so excited....I have a list of ideas brewing.

Please do share your experience if you try this project out - I would love to hear from you.

Much love and gratitude,

Student Spotlight : Janet Reid

Hello there beautiful friends! We are bathing in Spring sunlight here in Portland and it makes everyone a little giddy - me included! I've been super busy in the studio preparing for new classes and exploring lots of new techniques.

My students have also been busy bees - creating the most gorgeous art! I can't even express how much joy that brings me! So much joy that I have decided to start sharing these amazing artists with you! I will begin to do periodic Student Spotlight posts so you can witness the talent and beauty emerging from these shining souls!

Today, I want to introduce you to Janet Reid!

12791113_521097328063286_2704806245975040704_n.jpg

Janet has been a long time student and Facebook friend. I admired her work immediately and have since, seen her grow and expand her talents in great strides. She has an innate ability to compose lyrical and poetic arrangements. Both her digital and traditional collages beg the viewer to look deeper and wonder at the symbolism and mystery within.

12705445_515734861932866_4303133080424944698_n

I asked Janet a few questions so you guys can get to know her a little better - a peek into her beautiful mind and creative heart...

What inspires you?

Honestly....everything!  I am so lucky to live in a beautiful place--Santa Barbara--and all around me I see color, and texture, and composition just naturally occurring every day. I'm inspired by fellow artists, especially on Instagram.  Everyday I check my feed and feel like I'm being bathed in beauty and talent.  It's like artistic nourishment.  And I'm inspired by the wonderful teachers I've been so fortunate to have recently and all the work I have seen that has been shared in class Facebook pages.  Ivy has been an invaluable part of my artistic journey. She is a true inspiration!

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 12.03.26 PM

What are you trying to express with your art?

Different things at different times.  Sometimes it's a story or an idea I try to express visually.  Other times the art has "a mind of its own" and the concept or message becomes clear to me only after it's finished or during the process itself.  That's when it feels magical.  Being a mixed media artist gives me a lot of freedom to work both abstractly and figuratively and at times to combine the two.  What I hope gets expressed is the joy I feel when I am doing it.  Right now, my work with encaustic collage is like a dream come true.

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 12.08.23 PM

How do you deal with your inner critic and trust your creative instincts?

Oh, that little voice....usually I can silence her by just continuing.  Sometimes, I will hear her say, "Ok, that was a failure," but I've come to almost welcome that point.  That's when I give up trying to make something work and just see what will happen--the "I have nothing to lose" feeling.   Many times something even more wonderful comes out of that moment--the giving in.  Trusting my instincts has become a learned process.  My advice to anyone who struggles with this is to simply keep working, keep creating.  Try to do something creative each and every day--a snapshot with your phone or a full blown painting--it doesn't matter.  Just keep looking and seeing.

Okay - one last bit of love. You guys know I love encaustics and I also love learning new techniques. Nancy Crawford is a talented encaustic artist and she makes great little tutorial videos. In this one she uses pan pastels with her encaustics and I just love the look. I had to try it myself. Here is a pic of my own work incorporating this technique…

Making Friends with Encaustics

Hello lovely people! Hope your weekend was fantastic!

I've been busy preparing the online classroom for my Mixed Media & Encaustic workshop and I'm getting questions about Encaustics and what you need to start.

So let's talk Encaustics - yeah...it sounds pretty serious, a little scary and slightly dangerous but I'm here to put your fears at rest! In my personal experience, I have found that working with this magical medium has been incredibly enjoyable, very experimental and basically tons of fun!

I wanted to share the Wax Set Up video that will be in the online class. My hope, is that seeing this will help you guys feel more comfortable exploring wax! You just gotta try it!

Mixed Media Workshop - Success!

Hello friends! I hope you are all doing well and enjoying the holiday season! I gotta tell you my heart has been bursting with joy since teaching my Mixed Media Workshop this past weekend!

Oh. My. Goodness! I couldn't even have wished for a better outcome! All my nerves quickly melted away as I met each beautiful student - 7 shining, bright, amazing women! What a group! Plus, my co-hostess, Katie was SO awesome! She handled all the food, drink and goodies so I could focus on teaching Art! Total bliss!

Instead of rambling on and on, I'll just share some of the photos...

I wanted to make sure every detail was thought of! It was a labor of LOVE and worth every second.

My living room was gutted and turned into a festive classroom! What a truly rewarding experience to get the opportunity to teach what I am so passionate about. We used collage, encaustics, acrylic paint, pastels, ink, oil pastels and more! It was a serious Mixed Media Party!!

The weekend ended with an Open Studio session on Sunday morning back at my place.

Oh and this sweet video brought me to tears of joy. Thanks guys!

This experience has deeply changed me. I challenged myself to do something that terrified me and conquered it! Woo! What a fabulous feeling! On top of that, I made authentic, magical connections to new artistic friends. Plus, I think I have finally found my calling. Teaching felt exhilarating, inspiring and just so darn right! I am so incredibly grateful. Thank you to all who participated! I can't wait till the next one!

Life after the Art Retreat

Hi lovely people. How's life treating you? With lots of love, I hope. I've been playing catch up since I got back from my wonderful Art Retreat. It was a pretty rough re-entry into reality after four days of blissful art-making, learning, laughing and connecting with beautiful, inspiring artists! I arrived home to a sick Claire bear and a rather exhausted hubby. Poor Chris!

Claire had conjunctivitis in both eyes and a nasty head cold. I scooped her up in my arms and went straight into mommy/nurse mode. Thinking that she would recover quickly was a big mistake. Her eyes cleared in a few days but the cold turned into viral infection with fever for 5 days and then ear infections! Sigh. BIG UNHAPPY FACE. My typical schedule went right in the trash and all that anticipation to keep creating art came to a screeching halt. It was a tough week...and then I got sick too...ugh!

Screen Shot 2014-05-16 at 3.44.50 PM

I'm happy to report that she is all better now! Smiling and laughing (and having melt downs) like her usual self. I am still on the mend but excited to get creating again. I even started a new e-course, that I am loving!

So...I know... you are wondering...how was the Retreat?

One word - Divine.

Katie and I left on Thursday morning to drive up to Bainbridge Island, WA. The weather was a perfect 75 and sunny. Couldn't ask for a better day for a road trip. With my car loaded up with art supplies, we made the 3 1/2 hour journey with Starbucks stops and a lovely lunch in Olympia sprinkled in.

We arrived at our rental condo for the weekend. The actual retreat was at the Wacky Nut Farm but since we were the only locals attending, we snapped up this place which is just five minutes down the road. Totally gorgeous and highly recommended! This was our view...

seattle day

seattle night

That night shot was fun to capture! I set my camera up on the ledge of the balcony and did a long exposure! Very cool to experiment with...you must give it a try!

Anyway, once we got settled in we went over to the farm to meet up with the ladies. I was so nervous and excited to actually meet Jeanne and Stephanie in person! We were greeted by our ever gracious and lovely host, Serena and as we met the other women and the teachers I felt my shoulders drop and my butterflies disappear.  The retreat unfolded beautifully. The women were warm and open. The teachers were inspiring and genuine. And the art making was truly blissful. I'll stop ranting and let the images tell the story...

This was a collaborative piece! It was a true exercise in trust that Stephanie walked us through. Giving up control of your art and having faith that each student would add beauty to it was challenging but it was a seriously moving and emotional creative experience! It was amazing to have each woman make their mark on this piece. I love that it has been touched by them all.

I will never forget these amazing women and I hope to see them in the future. Truly beautiful souls!

This retreat truly affected me and will be a powerful memory always. I hope to go on more art adventures in the future!

Thank you to all the ladies for being so kind, genuine and inspiring. Thank you to our fantastic teachers for pushing us, lifting our spirits and feeding the flame of our creativity and a BIG thank you to our host, Serena for being so incredibly warm, putting us all at ease and taking such good care of us. Your hard work, love and connection to us all was deeply felt and appreciated.

Okay sorry for the looooong post...but that was a lot to catch you up on.

Experimenting with Encaustic Art

Hi there! How are you? We have been pretty good over here. Enjoying the beautiful Spring blossoms everywhere and the more frequent sun breaks too! Maybe it's the Spring energy or the fact that I've started the second part to the Brené Brown online class but I'm feeling inspired! I have been wanting to try encaustic art forever but I've always been a bit intimidated by all that comes with it.

Well...this week I finally dove right in! I ordered my encaustic medium, a heated palette (mini griddle), hake brushes, encaustic boards and a heat gun. While waiting for it all, I devoured this book and watched every youtube video on encaustic that I could find.  Yesterday, it all arrived on my doorstep and I was like a kid at Christmas! All smiles, clapping my hands and doing a little jig. I was that excited. Dorky but true. My mind was a flurry with all the dreamy creations I was going to make using this magical medium!

That evening, after the girls were down and the kitchen looked decent, I set up my encaustic paint "studio" (in my dining room). I opened windows, plugged in the griddle, melted the wax, warmed the brushes and the board and proceeded to lay down my first coat of wax. This is kinda how it went---->

Eeek! It's all uneven.

The brush must be too cool.

Wait or is it the board?

Did I get the right brushes?

<insert swear word here>

Okay calm down.

Try another coat. Don't forget to fuse first!

How long do I fuse for again? <swear word>

Second coat went down. Sigh...more unevenness...brush strokes, pitting.

<more swearing>

Okay, so maybe this isn't as easy as it looks!

I stopped and took a minute to reassess. What am I doing wrong?

Then it dawned on me...how ridiculous to think that I would get it right on the first go! I told myself to relax and just play. I would learn by my mistakes and I had to trust that with practice, I would figure it out.

With that attitude adjustment, the rest of the evening was a blast! Here is my first attempt.

The tree was stamped onto the board with acrylic paint. After that was dry, I put my first layer of wax down. The color was added by way of PanPastels and Gelatos that I smeared together into the wax. The pieces of antique paper were simply collaged onto the piece and coated in wax. Lastly, I added the jewels and painted some details with white acrylic. Here are some close ups of the textures created by the layers of encaustic. IMG_8989

You can see in this one where I used a stylus tool to actually carved the wax to bring out the details in the tree.

It was late so I headed to bed...

Today, I couldn't wait to get back to it, so as soon as Claire was down for nap I got creating! Here is my second go at it. I kept the color palette and composition similar so I could focus on technique. The process got a tad easier and I got a little braver.  On this piece, I used a stencil to create a raised wax pattern. I also moved my "studio" into the kitchen and worked right on top of our glass cooktop and countertops. Put wax paper down first! They are not kidding about those fumes from the wax, so I put my little griddle right next to the exhaust downdraft fan on my stove and it sucked all the icky fumes right down! I also opened up the kitchen window very wide. Last night, I learned the hard way and went to bed with a headache. So today I wasn't going to risk breathing that stuff in.

I also learned that if you add PanPastel, oil pastel or Gelatos to your wax layer and you don't like them - Yikes! - you can clean it all off using Linseed Oil and a paper towel! Yah!!

I absolutely love working this way and I'm looking forward to experimenting more with encaustics. I think I'll do something more abstract next time? Hmmm...

Anyway, let me know if you have any questions. I'm FAR from an expert, obviously, but I'm here to help if I can! :)

Have a beautiful weekend and go try something new!

Much love,

Ivy

Hello friends and Happy Friday! Baby is sleeping and I'm busy pinning...as in Pinterest. Yes. It's a serious job and someone has to do it. My Pinterest feed is being flooded with images of gorgeous encaustic art! I'm dying to try it! I just ordered this book and I'm looking for a local class or e-course so let me know if you guys know of one. Anyway, through my hunt for beautiful Encaustic artwork I discovered an amazing artist : Angela Petsis. I am seriously swooning as I go through her stunning portfolio of work! I adore the layering, vintage elements and poetic softness of her work. Absolutely breathtaking.
