NEW Online Portrait Class

Hello there creatives,

I'm thrilled to announce that registration for my BRAND NEW CLASS is now OPEN.  I've had so many requests to teach my expressive portrait techniques, so I've finally created this mini portrait class.

I'm excited to share not only my tools but also how I use both my left and right hand to activate both sides of my brain in the creative process. It's truly been a game changer for me! Click below to learn more and register...

I believe that sometimes less is more with portraits. Some of the most expressive work is created with simple materials and often times a lack of color. The focus becomes emotion, line, form and of course shadow and light. These portraits pull us in, make us stop in our tracks and feel!

So, I invite you to join me for this special class where we will explore some of my favorite tools, tricks and tips for creating evocative, expressive portraits.

Art to Adore: Lifebook 2016 Students

Hi there! Happy Thursday! It's always a fun day for me because it's Studio Day with my art buddy, Robin Laws. We are going to be watching Katie Kendrick videos from her new online class and painting away!

So far, 2016 has been a whirlwind with many new classes that I am both taking and teaching for. One of which is Lifebook. This amazing class has over 2900 students all actively creating beautiful work. You should see my Facebook feed! While it is hard to keep up with, I am absolutely in love with all the art that flows through it from such talented students.

My bonus lesson for Lifebook aired on Jan. 4th and it was called "Patch it up, Make it Shine". The thought behind the tutorial was to write down limiting or negative beliefs and thoughts that we want to leave behind in 2015 and then collage and paint over these words with gorgeous metallics, powerful intentions and more illuminated imagery to light our path into 2016. I have been absolutely blown away by the pieces that have come from this project.

I have gathered a few of the ones that truly touched me with their beauty....enjoy....

Online Mixed Media Workshop - Shades of White

Hello there! I hope your Monday morning is going well! I was up with the birds and on my second cup of coffee already! Yes, I’m a little excited because today I’m launching my very last class for 2015!

Shades of White ButtonLet me fill you in...

Come join me for this one week Online Mixed Media workshop where we explore the beauty and subtlety of white and neutrals! When we strip away color - texture, contrast and ultimately design and composition come to the forefront. We will focus on these artistic aesthetics as we complete three beautifully unique projects:

  • A “Zen Abstract” Encaustic Wax Collage using vintage and handmade papers with a focus on balance, simplicity, unity and tranquility.
  • A beautiful “Woman in White” Portrait, inspired by Whistler’s painting “Symphony of White I” using acrylic paint and soft chalk pastels while exploring a multitude of milky hues and lessons on drawing the face and figure.
  • A “White Horses on the Horizon” landscape painting incorporating, pattern, texture and finally cold wax to create a dreamy finish.

Shades of White collage

I’m beyond thrilled to share these projects with you! Plus, these creations would make amazing gifts for your loved ones! Just in time for the holidays!

Read more about the class* and register here! Classroom opens Dec 1**.

Let's Face It: Inspired by Portraits

Hello creative friends! How is your week treating you? I hope all is well in your world.

You may or may not have noticed that I've been a little obsessed lately...and not just with Art in general but in particular - Portraiture! I've always loved drawing faces but recently its become a daily practice of pushing myself, striving for more accuracy, expression and depth. I'm exploring techniques and mediums like never before and after I complete one face I quickly begin another.

All this energy has sprung forth for a couple of reasons...but the MAIN one is because I accepted an opportunity to teach on the Let's Face It Online workshop! This year has been about growth, so I've said YES to the wonderful doors that are opening to me! However, I had no idea what an impact this would have on my own deep desire to hone my skills and better my practice as an Artist.

Here is some of the work I've been doing to prepare to teach this class...

It started with black and white charcoal studies...

and has now led me to color too...looks like I'm a teensy bit in LOVE with my new Sennelier Soft Pastels!!!

I'm enjoying the feeling of a challenge and there is nothing better than feeling yourself expand! This class will be so wonderful. I do hope you will join me and the other talented teachers for this fantastic Portraiture class!

I can't wait to share some of my own techniques and creative processes!

Flight & Feather Round Two

My kids disagree but seriously - there is only so much candy one needs lying about! Now, as for art supplies - that's another story! One can never have too much as far as I'm concerned! ;)

Speaking of art, I'm so excited to share just some of the gorgeous student work from the first week of Flight & Feather! My students never cease to amaze and inspire me!

My Artwork from Katie Kendrick's Seattle Workshop

Hi there! Hope everyone got through Monday! Wow, what a whirlwind with Lifebook 2016 opening plus my blog hop with Let's Face it! Geez! I have really filled up my 2016 teaching schedule and you know what? I like it like that! :)

However, I never got the chance to fill you in on how my weekend away at Katie Kendrick's amazing workshop went...

Well, it was...as expected - transformative, revealing, emotional, joyous and powerful. Yeah, it was that good!

Here is a pic of one of Katie's work in progress...

IMG_5926

Katie has an exquisite energy that resonated through all in attendance. She truly provided a grounded, meditative and safe place for us to unfurl, explore and simply be present with our creations. Her instruction and deep intention for us was to "Empty ourselves of everything." She handed out slips of paper with these words boldly typed. I taped mine to my easel as a reminder.

IMG_5872

This class was focused on intuitive, expressive work on larger scale canvases. Larger than most of us were comfortable working on (including me)!

My large canvas stared at me blankly and I stared back. I hesitated but with Katie's gentle guiding the class moved into action as we began making marks with graphite or charcoal using our non-dominate hand. Random marks, whatever felt right or not right...it didn't matter. Just keep moving! She said more than once "Keep your brain in your hand!" I loved this and reminded myself of this when my critical mind would interrupt the flow.

Before long images began to form...I followed them...without judgement or expectation.

katie collage1

Ancient faces, native and wild, feathers, orbs, tangled tree roots...these gradually came to life on the canvas. I stayed present as best I could...allowing the creativity to just be. Pure and unchained by my own insecurities. It was really an amazing experience. My soul had been waiting for this opportunity.

The Feathered Ones

Here is the finished piece. I still don't completely understand what part of me created this...but I have a deep attachment to it. I named it "The Feathered Ones". This piece was done using charcoal and acrylic paint.

Now, I could have packed up my stuff and gone home a happy camper but the first day was only half done! Yes, I worked rather fast! I couldn't help it.

So, I picked up a large piece of heavy paper and began the process again...

katie collage 2

one with deer

This lovely lady and her three deer arrived rather quickly. Their shapes almost forming from each other. This one I have called "Awinita". I used charcoal, ink and acrylic paint.

Exhausted by the time I had finished her and thankful as Day One came to a blissful close.

Bright and early the next day we began our grounding meditation, followed by more creative exercises. I had one last large canvas that needed tending to! I was determined to create one more finished piece!

This one was a rather emotional, it went through several twists and turns. Most of which, surprised and even alarmed me.

katie collage 3

the king's son

Finally arriving at a place where I felt it was complete...I entitled it "The King's Son". Done with charcoal, ink, acrylic paint and collage.

I gotta tell you that when I somehow morphed the male figure into a big black bird I was a little freaked out. The woman standing next to me asked me if I was ok...I think I must have looked shocked...or something. I hadn't expected that, yet I knew it was exactly right.

Here are some details from the piece.

katie collage 4

Okay...so I know that was kinda a long post but I just had to share this incredible experience with you. If you ever get the chance to take a class with Katie do it! Be ready to really challenge yourself and connect deeply with your Art!

Have a beautiful Tuesday!
