ART to adore - Kat Hannah

Hello friends, How are you?

All is well in the Newport home. Busy with all the routines that make our days fly by. It can get a little nuts! Which is why I wanted to feature this artist today - Kat Hannah.

Her beautiful artwork holds a stillness for me. A sense of surrender. Minimal. Soft and yet poignant, I adore these works.

Aren't they wonderful? I love how they evoke so much story with so little detail. Please do go visit Kat's Etsy shop...she has so many more gorgeous pieces.

Have a wonderful rest of the week!

Life lately...

Hello there! Oh my goodness, it's been a tough couple of weeks! My little Claire bear is just now getting over pneumonia. Poor baby...and well...poor Mama. We were both sick of being cooped up so it was fantastic to take her to daycare yesterday and see how happy she was to run into the classroom and play with her wee friends. I started the day (childfree) with a trip to the nail salon for a quick, Spring manicure! My hands were trashed from constantly washing them! It's amazing what a coat of pretty nail polish can do to lift your spirit! ;)

Anyway, as you can imagine, I haven't had much time to paint or do anything really BUT thank goodness for my iPad because it's so easy to reach for it and create something minus the setup/cleanup. Here are a couple of digital collages I made this past week...

Absolutely love creating on the app - Procreate! Such fun! Oh, and I just splurged on a new pressure sensitive stylus. I highly recommend it!

A couple of other things to share with you...I just received the most gorgeous necklace from my jewelry designer friend.

It's a beautiful piece of lapis lazuli and it resembles a dreamy piece of the starlit sky! I adore it! Thank you Amy!

I also finally got a bracelet from Becky at Farm Girl Paints on Etsy! It reminds me to keep my head up and live courageously - not easy for this girl - who tends to back away from scary or intimidating situations...

Oh and I did a little Spring cleaning in my studio! I'm hoping to start creating more frequently now that both kids are healthy!

Screen Shot 2014-03-14 at 12.34.01 PM(I spy a sleepy kitty.) ;)

And....lastly...a little glimpse of Spring blossoms popping in my neighborhood. Such a beautiful time of year!

I hope you are all healthy and happy! Enjoy your weekend!

Hello friends and Happy Friday! Baby is sleeping and I'm busy pinning...as in Pinterest. Yes. It's a serious job and someone has to do it. My Pinterest feed is being flooded with images of gorgeous encaustic art! I'm dying to try it! I just ordered this book and I'm looking for a local class or e-course so let me know if you guys know of one. Anyway, through my hunt for beautiful Encaustic artwork I discovered an amazing artist : Angela Petsis. I am seriously swooning as I go through her stunning portfolio of work! I adore the layering, vintage elements and poetic softness of her work. Absolutely breathtaking.

Vintage Treasures

Hi everyone! Hope you have all had a lovely weekend. Last weekend, I spent the days treasure hunting! A dear friend and I hit the Portland Antique Fair plus some vintage shops and flea markets. Hard work but so much fun! Here are a few of the pretty items we discovered. I will be listing them in the shop this week.

Love this sweet, Farmhouse style kitchen scale! It's rare to find this color so I was thrilled when I came upon this one!

There is something so homey about these lovely soup bowls. You can imagine filling them to the brim with a delicious soup while the rain comes down outside. I paired them with these stately antique soup spoons too!

Mail isn't as pretty as it used to be but we should still have a beautiful place to hold it right? Love this silver tone, vintage letter holder. Very Art Nouveau.

I'm so drawn to lavender glass. It's romantic, nostalgic and looks so gorgeous when the light passes through it. This antique wasp catcher is missing its cork but still remains a lovely, rustic piece.

Okay well, these are just a few of the pretties we found. Hope you enjoyed them.

Etsy Love : love and peas creations

Hello there! How's your week going so far? Hope all the Mamas out there had a beautiful Mother's Day! My dear hubby sent me up to Skamania Lodge for some alone time to recharge. So sweet! I came home on Sunday to warm hugs, handmade cards (by Grace), a bouquet of peonies (my fav) and veggie lasagna for dinner. Needless to say, I felt completely spoiled. I even got to complete a small mixed media painting - which I will share with you soon! Today, I wanted to share with you a sweet little Etsy shop - loveandpeascreations - owned by artist, Jenny Blair. I just adore her stunning work! She combines mixed media illustrations with wonderful hand sewn elements. (Oh, how I wish I could sew!) The blend of paint, pencil, fabric and thread creates gorgeous texture and color. Have a look for yourself...

Grin & Bear it.

Hi there! How is your week going so far? We are getting so much sun here in Portland that I'm a bit giddy! It's a little bizarre but I'll take it! Maybe it's the extra Vitamin D but even my dreams have been stranger than usual. You see, I have recurring dreams with a bear in it. Yup. A big ole' grizzly bear that I always see on the outskirts of a forest. He is always tromping through the trees on two feet appearing rather ferocious. He never actually gets me or even gets very close but the dream is alarming and always stays with me all day. This last time, I woke up from the dream and this thought entered my mind - "The bear represents change."  It hit me like a bolt and thinking back I realized that I have my "bear dream" when lots of change is entering my life. All of a sudden both the changes and the bear seemed less frightening.  I decided to look up what a bear stands for in dreams and found that actually the bear can symbolize being brave, facing the world alone and encourages independence and strength in motherhood. Be the Mama Bear. Okay. I can do that.

To remind me of this, I just bought this print from Corella Designs on Etsy. The wonderful artist is Donna McKenizie. I love this big bear and I love that what at first seemed scary is now making me stronger.

Hello, Sydney.

il_570xN.295996781{artwork via here}

Hi there my lovely readers!

Well, I have some exciting news to share with you today - we are leaving for Sydney, Australia on Thursday - yes, as in two days from now!! A last minute opportunity landed in our laps yesterday, when one of my hubby's clients invited him to an executive retreat in Sydney. Well...as many of you know, that is my birthplace and there was NO way in hell that I wasn't going with him. So we scrambled and made arrangements for my parents to fly in and take care of the girls! I'm in total shock!

I've gotten in touch with several of my childhood friends, so I hope to meet up with them and catch up! I haven't been back since we left in 1994!! I was in the 11th grade. It was so hard to leave all my friends but at the time we kinda idolized America and I had fanciful notions of becoming a cheerleader, dating a quarterback and going to Prom! ha! Things didn't quite pan out like that...

Anyway, I have always wanted to go back and visit so I feel incredibly grateful for this chance! I will be taking tons of photos and hope to post a bit while I'm there!

See you when I return from the land Down-Under...

A Cup of Spring

Hi there friends! How was your Easter? We had a fabulous time visiting the gorgeous Brasada Ranch in Central Oregon. I have so many pictures to share with you but they need to be processed, so while I'm working on all that, I wanted to show you some pretty pics of the recent teacup I found. She's a real beauty and so perfect for Spring.

pretty pink teacup3

She is a lovely example of 1940's lusterware by Royal Halsey and has a beautiful pearl like shimmer. The sweet clusters of rose blossoms go from petal pink to deep garnet and are paired perfectly with swirling gold embellishments.

She is in the shop now just waiting to be loved.

Hope you are enjoying all the beautiful blossoms of Spring!

Etsy Love: Royal Wedding Souvenirs

The countdown is on and the Royal Wedding is just around the corner! Excited! I can't help it. In fact, I couldn't resist this sweet little mug from this Etsy shop... and I'm so tempted to get this tote...*sigh*...I'm such a sucker for romance.

I've accepted the fact that I won't ever get that gorgeous sapphire ring but these will do nicely...

What about some decorations...this Union Jack bunting is darling...

And I just love this print...

Every girl should own a crown...why not wear it around your neck? It's more subtle, really.

Look at this lovely little necklace...

Ooh and remember that gorgeous cobalt blue dress that Kate wore when they announced their engagement? Get your own version here. Perfectly lady like.

Okay...just one more...have sweet dreams of your own prince on this precious handmade pillow...

Have a beautiful Thursday my friends. Will you be watching the big event?

Etsy Love: joojoo

Last night, I went to my fabulous book club. It is an amazing group of women that I feel so lucky to be a part of. After glasses of wine, a good healthy book discussion and plenty of delicious food we did our usual round of sharing what's been going on in our lives. One lovely lady had just been to Panama with her husband on a wildlife adventure! They are both passionate and devoted birders -  I hadn't known this about her. Both me and another bird fan squealed with delight as she described the amazing birds they had witnessed. I love it when you discover something about someone that connects you in a new way. By the end of the night, the three of us were talking about going on guided bird walks put on by the Audubon Society. I can't wait!

With birds on the brain today, I stumbled upon joojoo on Etsy. Artist, Afsaneh creates the sweetest bird illustrations! I had to share...

Aren't they precious? You must also visit her beautiful blog, here.

Hope your week is going well...I'm holding out for a sunny weekend!

Etsy Love: Macaron Magic

Lately, I've been wanting to buy macarons. Not because I have a craving, or I want to give them as a gift...I just want to take pictures of them. Yah...I know it sounds weird but I have seen the most gorgeous photos of macarons and I want to give it a try! I've almost ran out to Pix to get some...but I decided to head to Etsy for some inspiration first! My dear friend, Amy referred me to the beautiful work of Havilah...a local Portland photographer! Her Etsy shop - dearmachine has some lovely images! Check out these delightful photographs of this most famous French cookie...

So pretty right? I love that something so simple as a baked good can look so special. Almost as enchanting as a cupcake...

p.s. want to try making them yourself? here's a recipe from Martha. ;)

Tea obsession & Tabitha Emma

Today I felt so restless. Do you ever get that? Where you just can't sit down and focus...so annoying! Finally, I decided that a trip to the book store and a cup of tea might soothe my nerves. So off I went, grabbed a stack of inspiring mags and headed home for a cuppa. While sifting through the gorgeous pages of Somerset Studio and sipping some steaming Chamomile tea, I figured I had better find the perfect tea pot to go with my lovely new tea cup. I headed to Etsy to begin the search...

I have yet to find the "one", but I did stumbled upon a fabulous Aussie artist, Tabitha Emma, who seems to love tea as much as me. Aren't these sweet? I just ordered the print below. Couldn't resist.

And of course, any good tea party has lovely treats to go with it...

Once I find my teapot...I think I will have to get this cozy for it. Tabitha makes adorable fabric creations too!

And Grace...well, she desperately wants this cake purse! Every girl needs a cake purse right? She cracks me up.

Check out Tabitha's gorgeous Etsy store and blog for more of her beautiful work! Aussie's rock, don't they? Speaking of Aussie's, tomorrow we are headed to my home town - Sydney for our Friday Escape! woo!

p.s. If anyone knows where I can hunt for vintage tea pots online let me know!

Etsy Love: Whimsy Whimsical

Sometimes you just need something sweet. A chocolate, a little cupcake or maybe a darling note card. Yes, these handmade cards are seriously sweet, like make you cheeks-tingle-sweet. I love them!

Malaysian Artist, Yee Von creates these precious illustrations using pen and ink and then digitally colors them. She has this shop on Etsy but also features her lovely figurative work at this shop. Make sure you stop by both, they are a real treat! Her blog is also very beautiful!

Happy Wednesday!

Etsy Love: Cloth and Patina

As many of you know, Etsy is home to a vast array of amazing vintage and handmade goods. Sometimes you feel overwhelmed by the sheer yumminess of it. At least, I do... There are days when I visit Etsy and right there on the home page, something stands out and grabs my attention. Today, a little shop called Cloth and Patina did that for me.

The store's owner is an obvious treasure hunter, like myself and I found myself drooling over some of her finds. I really appreciate how she re-invents some these found objects...like this gorgeous frame.

or these tiny tart tins. They make adorable magnets don't they?

This little glass apple is so precious. I want one.

I love the silver shimmer of these vintage glasses. Hard to resist...

This little kitty....what does he do? Well...he holds your glasses! haha! This one made me giggle. I'm always losing my glasses!

He looks smarter right?

Her treasures are many, but at the end of the day these little guys (salt and pepper shakers) went home with me...

Yes, I know. I'm a bird freak.

Go check out her beautiful selections for yourself. I'm sure you will find a sweet trinket that you just have to have!

Do you enjoy treasure hunting? Antiquing? Garage sales? What was your best find?

Etsy Love - Trish Grantham

Happy Tuesday! Hope your morning is going well. Today, I have a new favorite, Portland artist to share with you. Her name is Trish Grantham and her work is absolutely delightful!

Back in early December, I attended the most lovely, curated Sunday Best Holiday Show with my friend Amy. It featured some of the best handmade art around. Trish had her table up front and was my first stop! I quickly purchased a stack of her gorgeous postcards and drooled over her wood & resin originals. One day, I will own one!

Her work makes me smile. I love the whimsical nature of it, the distinctive way she varies her line weight and of course, the layering of all those precious vintage papers! Her little characters are enchanting and authentic, conveying an unexpected dose of emotion and feeling. And yes, I'm a sucker for her birds! I'm a bird freak...I know.

Have a look....

Her paintings have been shown all over the world, including Tokyo, Sydney and London! Get your very own piece from her Etsy shop and check out her full gallery of work on her site.

So inspiring!

My first show...

My feet were very mad at me today. Wearing 3-inch heels for 7 hours straight is not on my list of skills anymore...however all the aches and pains of today were worth it! The trunk show was so lovely and so rewarding! This was my first big event for Grace & Ivy and having it at my home made me all the more nervous. Thank goodness for my wonderful new friends, who encouraged me and supported me all the way through! The day was very chilly, with some rain but inside it was nice and cozy. We had a fire burning, mulled cider on the stove, elegant holiday music playing and plenty of decadent sweets to share with our guests! Our little shop was open for business and it wasn't long before we got quite busy. At first, I felt quite hesitant but the butterflies left my stomach as I began to chat with our shoppers. I found a wonderful feeling of connection with them. I got to answer questions, share my story and assist my customers with their selections. It was quite a high! The best compliment was to observe our guests making themselves at home by the fire and chatting with new people. Everyone felt comfortable - they wanted to hang out! I loved it!

So you know me...I had to take several pics...some are blurry...forgive me...but I had to share with you.

Don't you love the snowflakes? We all made a bunch and then incorporated them into the decorations. Great idea Amy!

Jen brought these beautiful turquoise, vintage bottles for the mantel. Love them!

Setting up... Up front you can see Barbara's gorgeous t-shirts and baby wear!

My little table! I had samples out of my brown sugar scrub and the body butters. My new vanilla-ginger body butter was a sure favorite and sold out fast!

(It's so new that it's not even on my Etsy site yet. So if you want one just shoot me an email!)

I got a little obsessed dressing the table. My husband cut me off after I hand drew the tiny stars on the paper trees...

I tried to make the best of my poor old brass chandelier by adorning it with a wreath of greens and our delicate little snowflakes.

All in all, it was a fantastic day. Thank you so much to everyone who came and supported us. We so appreciate it!!

Have a lovely Monday. I'm hoping for a snow day!

xo,

p.s. Also sending out a big thank you to Matt, Jen's husband, who provided us with lovely jazz music into the evening hours!

Handmade Trunk Show: La Fete de Noel

Hello Friends, I'm sorry I haven't posted today but I am super busy ramping up for the trunk show I'm having at my place on Nov. 20th! I'm so excited for it but wow...my studio is becoming a little nutty! My floor is lined with Grace and Ivy products, the kitchen smells like vanilla and ginger from cooking up sugar scrubs and my cat has deemed the empty boxes from my ingredient shipments her new hang out. She keeps popping her head out every time I enter the room. Too cute.

The mess means I'm busy...right?...so I really can't complain.

If you are a local Portlander, please do join us for some champagne, yummy holiday treats and of course, beautiful, handmade goods!

I'm thrilled to be co-hosting this show with my amazing friends and fellow artists, Amy, Barbara & Jen.  Amy creates stunning jewelry with a vintage touch, Barbara screen prints her amazing artwork onto sinfully soft clothing and Jen delivers stunning handcrafted collage greeting cards! Add my organic skin and body care and you've got a plethora of fabulous gift options for all the special people in your life! Giving handmade not only supports the artists in your community but makes you an incredibly generous and creative gift giver! It's a win - win!

Hope to see you there! Ok...back to work.

Gorgeous Nature Photography by Georgianna Lane

Hi friends...hope your Monday is going well. It's bright and sunny here, after a weekend of rain. The trees look so lovely with the morning sunshine on their leaves. So as you can probably tell...I am still completely enamored with Fall and when I came across these dreamy visions by Seattle photographer, Georgianna Lane, I knew I had to share them with you...

Aren't they gorgeous? She does a whole series entitled "The Poetry of Trees". I think I may have to collect them all...

Please go wander through her Etsy store. It's a true delight. She also authors a lovely blog...here.

Hope these images brought some beauty to your day.

A little encouragement

Things are definitely changing for me. Grace has started full-time school...leaving my day wide open...

Yikes...now what? Well...I'm taking a blogging course and have signed up for the Sketchbook project. I'm starting to blog for other people and Grace & Ivy sales are on the up and up. It's a whirlwind of activity but I'm rolling with it and trying not to freak myself out. I'm so good at talking myself out of stuff. My sixth grade teacher said I was afraid of success. That's a handy trait...

Why do we hold ourselves back? Why do we fear our own power, our own greatness? Maybe because when you get to the top you have to fight to stay there. That's what makes me shake in my boots. I'm not much of a fighter. At least I don't think I am...

Today I'm gonna read this over and over:

And hope to believe in what I can do...

How do you deal with your own fears?

Be brave, friends.

P.S. If you love this beautiful statement, check out Valentina Ramos' Etsy Store - full of fabulous art and inspiration!
