Flight & Feather - A New Online Mixed Media and encaustic workshop

Hi there friends! Hope your week is off to a great start! The Fall weather here has been outstanding and we even managed to get out to the Oregon wine country and picnic with the kids this weekend! We happen to have some lovely friends who have a beautiful vacation rental home out there that I got to help decorate! Very fun to juice up the ole' interior designer brain that doesn't get much use anymore!

Anyway, I have some seriously exciting news to share! I have just opened up registration for my new online mixed media and encaustic workshop - Flight & Feather!

Flight & Feather with text

This two week online workshop will explore the magic, grace and beauty of birds! When I look around my studio, I notice how many bird images and sweet stray feathers I have lying about. Birds appear in my work all the time, so I was inspired to create a class all about them!

flight and feather collage

We will be completing 4 main projects and several studies and exercises. These creations would make beautiful gifts for loved ones and friends for the upcoming holiday season too!

I made a little video so you can hear more about it... [vimeo 140497500 w=500 h=281]

Things that we will cover in the workshop:

  • A guided tour of Birds in Art throughout history
  • Bird symbolism and mythology
  • Creating bird sketches with ink and charcoal on vintage papers
  • A study of drawing feathers and wings
  • Bird poetry inspired art journal spread
  • How to set up your encaustic wax
  • A bird/woman metamorphosis portrait collage
  • Feather & Wax Collage
  • Landscape/Bird collage with wax, oil sticks and gold leaf

This class is a must for anyone who loves birds and ART!

I really enjoy guiding and communicating with my students, so I will only be taking a limited number. Registration will close when the classroom reaches maximum occupancy.

Do MORE Art in 2014

Hello everyone! How are you all? I hope you have been enjoying the Holiday season with family and friends. So...are you ready for 2014? I think I am. I'm excited about the new possibilities and adventures ahead!

Of course, it's always good to look back over the year and appreciate all the beautiful experiences we've had. To ponder all that we have learned and how we have grown. The mistakes, the regrets...it's all part of our path so don't focus on those too much. ;) The choices we make now are what truly matters. What will you do with your New Year? What changes will you make? How will you choose to spend your time? These are all things that are on my mind today.

Screen Shot 2013-12-31 at 12.54.50 PM

One of my "resolutions" is to DO MORE ART! I am now referring to my office as my studio and I re-organized the entire thing to display all my paints, brushes and artsy stuff. Easily accessible and ready for me. I signed up for an art retreat. I hung up images that inspire me. It felt SO good to set this intention! Now, I just have to do the work (not that art ever feels like work to me). Come to think of it...doing the art isn't the hard part. It's moving past the fear, the doubt and the all too familiar and un-nerving sensation that once I begin it could end in a complete ugly disaster.

I adore this quote by Elizabeth Gilbert. She totally nails it.

So here's to a fabulous 2014 full of love, joy and creativity! Sending you all big hugs and best wishes! Thank you for all your wonderful comments and amazing encouragement!

Little Red

Hello lovely people and Happy Friday! How are you? Our house is filled with the smell of our Christmas tree - I just love that about this time of year! Every morning, I go around the house turning on all the twinkle lights and appreciating their beautiful glow. I do love Christmas!

Wanted to share some pictures of little Claire Bear, that I managed to capture the other day. I'm surprised she kept the hood up, since she tends to dislike anything on her head - stubborn little bear...but so stinkin' cute.

Those eyes get me every time...and I think she's starting to figure that out. ;)

Pumpkin Patch Visit

Hi there my friends! How are you? I hope you are enjoying Fall. We have had a glorious, sun filled October, so of course, a visit to the local Pumpkin Patch was in order! I captured some shots of Claire among the piles of pumpkins. The autumn light has been so very pretty! Grace, thankfully, jumped into the last one too! (She was very busy visiting with all the animals on location so it was hard to pull her away!) pumpkin5 edit

After a little hunting, we found four lovely pumpkins. One for each of us. Of course, we also managed to go home with fudge, fresh pumpkin donuts and homemade berry jam. Yum! I didn't grow up going to a Pumpkin patch for Halloween but I'm happy this has become a sweet tradition for our family.

What traditions do you have in your family for this time of year?

Enjoy the rest of the week.

P.S. I am still working on my Brené Brown homework. I will be sharing it with you soon, I promise. By the way, her book = TOTALLY life-changing!

Grace & Dottie

Hi there! How is week going so far? All is well, here at the Newports. Claire Bear is saying more "words" and is desperately trying to stand on her own. Grace is getting excited to celebrate her 7th birthday later this month so we are in party planning mode and my dear hubby is super busy but grateful for the work. As for me, I'm excited to start a new online art class with Jeanne Oliver on Monday! I've been absolutely dying to make some art but I always do better with a specific assignment and a deadline...must be programmed into my brain from art college! I'm hoping to gut my studio this weekend and prepare all my art supplies so I will be ready to dive in. Eeeek! Can't wait!! Okay, so I promised to share some photos from our trip to Brasada Ranch and I managed to get these done the other evening. This is Grace and the ranch dog, Dottie. Grace was completely smitten with her. Every chance she got she would beg us to take her up to the main lodge to visit her. It was really sweet to see the connection between the two of them...

Friday Escape: The Most Romantic Hotel in the World

My first thought of where we should go today was Paris. With Valentine's day upon us, I figured it would be a suitable destination...but...I found myself hesitating. Too obvious. So, I did a little digging and decided to take us somewhere a little bit unexpected - India! Currently ranked as the most romantic hotel in the world is the breathtaking Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur. Incredibly beautiful and dreamlike, this white marble palace seems to float on Lake Pichola waters, like a precious ivory flower. This architectural masterpiece was built by Maharana Jagat Singh in 1743. Royalty used it as a summer get away to escape the intense heat. Not too shabby for a summer home right? Let's go!

Obviously we've got to hop on a boat to get to the palace so...all aboard!

Almost there...

Welcome to the Palace. Ready to be treated like Royalty? Yes please.

I can't wait to see what the rooms are like! Let's have a peek into several of the suites...

Gorgeous right? Tough choice! But I think we deserve the Presidential Suite...don't you? Go big or go home.

Check out the view from our private terrace! This place is beyond magical.

I'm dying to explore the pool and gardens...come on...

I'm getting the feeling that romance was actually born here. Aren't the grounds stunning?

Okay, so I have a real treat for you. We usually hit a spa of some sort on our escapes but today...we are actually going on a SPA BOAT! Yup. Why not sail on the gentle waters of the lake while we slowly slip into a state of bliss...here it comes...

This spa boat idea is pure brilliance!

As the sun sets, let's go enjoy some dinner...

Don't want to join us? Would you rather have a private dinner out in the middle of the lake with your love? Go for it. It can be arranged. How's that for romantic?

As for the rest of us...let's enjoy a cocktail in the lounge while our table is being prepared...

I think we should dine in the gardens...don't you?

I leave you here to enjoy your meal and watch as the Palace is veiled in darkness. Experience the twinkling lights of a thousand candles, the fragrance of exotic blooms and hopefully a romantic night you'll never forget!

Thanks for coming with me on this Friday escape.

Happy Valentine's Day Weekend! Spend it with those you love.

p.s. Not quite ready to leave the Palace...watch the video tour here.

Happy New Year

Hello Friends! Happy New Year! I hope your holidays were lovely. We had a fabulous time here. Lots of food, wine and laughs! A wonderful Christmas with everyone under one roof - ours. Having the space this year, to host the festivities, was a real treat!

Today, we took down the tree (boo!) and all the twinkling lights (I miss them the most). I really hate taking down the decorations. It always makes me a little sad...like unpacking after a beautiful vacation...there's so much build up, so much excitement and then it's all over so fast. ho hum.

On the up side, I know 2011 is going to be fantastic! I've got lots of ideas and inspiration and I'm truly excited to see where this New Year will take me.

Speaking of inspiration...over the break, Chris got me Photoshop Elements and I've been dabbling with digital collage...wow...can you say FUN!

Here are my first three attempts...

I am having a blast playing around with this new medium. So many possibilities!

What's inspiring you right now? Got big plans for your New Year?

xo,

Happy Holidays!

My house is filled with family. The cupboards are stuffed with food and outside, the sky is silver-gray. Our street twinkles with row upon row of strung lights. Chimneys happily puff smoke from their tops, as families gather around the fire.

Yeah, it's a pretty special time of year...

I hope your holiday season is filled with love, happiness, peace and hope...oh and food...lots of food...and wine...you gotta have wine.

Happy Holidays! I will see you all in the New Year.

Thank you for all your love, encouragement and comments!

My first show...

My feet were very mad at me today. Wearing 3-inch heels for 7 hours straight is not on my list of skills anymore...however all the aches and pains of today were worth it! The trunk show was so lovely and so rewarding! This was my first big event for Grace & Ivy and having it at my home made me all the more nervous. Thank goodness for my wonderful new friends, who encouraged me and supported me all the way through! The day was very chilly, with some rain but inside it was nice and cozy. We had a fire burning, mulled cider on the stove, elegant holiday music playing and plenty of decadent sweets to share with our guests! Our little shop was open for business and it wasn't long before we got quite busy. At first, I felt quite hesitant but the butterflies left my stomach as I began to chat with our shoppers. I found a wonderful feeling of connection with them. I got to answer questions, share my story and assist my customers with their selections. It was quite a high! The best compliment was to observe our guests making themselves at home by the fire and chatting with new people. Everyone felt comfortable - they wanted to hang out! I loved it!

So you know me...I had to take several pics...some are blurry...forgive me...but I had to share with you.

Don't you love the snowflakes? We all made a bunch and then incorporated them into the decorations. Great idea Amy!

Jen brought these beautiful turquoise, vintage bottles for the mantel. Love them!

Setting up... Up front you can see Barbara's gorgeous t-shirts and baby wear!

My little table! I had samples out of my brown sugar scrub and the body butters. My new vanilla-ginger body butter was a sure favorite and sold out fast!

(It's so new that it's not even on my Etsy site yet. So if you want one just shoot me an email!)

I got a little obsessed dressing the table. My husband cut me off after I hand drew the tiny stars on the paper trees...

I tried to make the best of my poor old brass chandelier by adorning it with a wreath of greens and our delicate little snowflakes.

All in all, it was a fantastic day. Thank you so much to everyone who came and supported us. We so appreciate it!!

Have a lovely Monday. I'm hoping for a snow day!

xo,

p.s. Also sending out a big thank you to Matt, Jen's husband, who provided us with lovely jazz music into the evening hours!

Handmade Trunk Show: La Fete de Noel

Hello Friends, I'm sorry I haven't posted today but I am super busy ramping up for the trunk show I'm having at my place on Nov. 20th! I'm so excited for it but wow...my studio is becoming a little nutty! My floor is lined with Grace and Ivy products, the kitchen smells like vanilla and ginger from cooking up sugar scrubs and my cat has deemed the empty boxes from my ingredient shipments her new hang out. She keeps popping her head out every time I enter the room. Too cute.

The mess means I'm busy...right?...so I really can't complain.

If you are a local Portlander, please do join us for some champagne, yummy holiday treats and of course, beautiful, handmade goods!

I'm thrilled to be co-hosting this show with my amazing friends and fellow artists, Amy, Barbara & Jen.  Amy creates stunning jewelry with a vintage touch, Barbara screen prints her amazing artwork onto sinfully soft clothing and Jen delivers stunning handcrafted collage greeting cards! Add my organic skin and body care and you've got a plethora of fabulous gift options for all the special people in your life! Giving handmade not only supports the artists in your community but makes you an incredibly generous and creative gift giver! It's a win - win!

Hope to see you there! Ok...back to work.

Valentine Love Tree

When the time came to take down our Christmas decorations, my beloved Grace didn't handle it well. She moped about saying it was so sad that all the "twinky" lights were gone. I must admit, I had to agree. I always hate taking down the Xmas stuff...

I headed into her room to remove the small tree we had placed next to her chair.  She ran in front of me and held her hands out protectively.

"NO! You can't take down MY Christmas tree!!!" she protested.

I began to argue with her but then reconsidered. Why must we take down this pretty little tree?  Why not just make it into our "holiday" tree? I knelt down and told her my idea. She was thrilled. She got to keep her tree and we got to make decorations for Valentines day!

The crafts began immediately. Such fun.

Ivy
