As artists, we look for inspiration everywhere.

When we spend time outside, nature provides us with endless inspiration. In this class, we will explore some of the beauties found in our own backyards, flowers and birds. I will share with you some of my favorite techniques for bringing these beauties to life. We will work mainly in watercolor, but I will also show you how I add touches of mixed media to my paintings for extra detail and textures.

When we take the time to quietly observe the world around us we can find beauty in the simplicity of our own lives. The happy feeling you get when sitting among a patch of sunflowers or the exciting rush you get when a hummingbird visits your garden, these are experiences we can capture in our art. Join me on this artistic journey and embrace the beautiful quiet whispers of nature.

Here's a description of each of our special projects:

Warmup: Experiment and Plan

In our warmup lesson we will create a beautiful vision board that will help us with the main lesson in this class. With a little planning and practice our ‘art time’ can be more enjoyable and successful. This vision board is the perfect place to experiment with your ideas and to keep track of color palettes.

Main Lesson: Happiest of All the Flowers

In this lesson I show you how to use multiple reference photos to create a magical image of a sunflower and a beautiful little hummingbird. I share with you some of my favorite techniques for achieving detail and texture. Creating shadows on the yellow petals can be intimidating but I will show you my simple way of adding those shadows and creating a flower that looks like it comes right out of the paper.
