Some of the most exciting creative moments happen when an experiment becomes something you never could have planned from the beginning.
In Folkhearted, artist Monica Stadalski invites you to make room for those unexpected discoveries through the playful world of folk-inspired marks, patterns, symbols, and storytelling.
You don’t need experience with folk art or perfect brush control to join Monica. The individual marks you’ll work with are wonderfully simple. The magic happens when you repeat them, combine them, respond to what’s already on the page, and allow your own artistic personality to come through.
By the end of the class, you’ll have created a playful prompt tool, explored your own collection of folk-art marks and patterns, painted a beautiful fold-out bird filled with words and meaning, and created a tiny heart talisman to tuck inside.
More importantly, Monica hopes you’ll come away with a renewed sense of play and a reminder that some of your favorite creative discoveries happen when you stop worrying about the outcome and simply begin.

Supplies List
This is very much a use-what-you-have kind of class. The specific brands and colors above are simply the materials I used while creating my projects. Similar inks, paints, pens, and brushes can easily be substituted, and your choices are part of what will make your Folkhearted projects uniquely yours.
Paper
Canson XL Mixed Media Paper, 9" × 12", 98 lb. ○ I do not recommend watercolor paper for this project. Mixed-media paper is much easier to fold and manipulate.
2 sheets regular 8.5" × 11" printer paper
Scrap or protective paper to place underneath your work surface
Inks
I used a variety of blue, violet, and magenta inks. Please feel free to substitute similar colors or inks you already own.
Dr. Ph. Martin’s Bombay India Ink — Magenta
Jane Davenport Inkredible Ink — Blueberry
Jane Davenport Inkredible Ink — Violet Syrup
J. Herbin Calligraphy Ink — Lavender
Monteverde Bottled Ink — Jungle Hippo Dark Blue
Monteverde Jungle Hippo Dark Blue at Dromgoole’s
Gouache & Opaque Paint
White gouache — I used Holbein
Dr. Ph. Martin’s Bleed Proof White is another good option.
White craft/acrylic paint can also be used if that’s what you have, although I prefer gouache or Bleed Proof White.
Colored gouache for your practice paper — I used blue Master’s Touch gouache from Hobby Lobby. There is absolutely no need for expensive gouache for this class. Use any brand or color you already have.
Pens & Drawing Tools
Dark pen — use your favorite. I used/suggested:
Opaque white pen or marker that will show over your dried ink ○ I used a Utillo Craft white acrylic paint marker.
A white gel pen is another option.
Gold foil pen — any brand ○ You can also use metallic gold watercolor or a gold metallic gel pen.

Eraser
Brushes
An assortment of round brushes with springy tips. I used sizes 2, 4, and 8
You don't need those exact sizes; a few small-to-medium round brushes that come to a good point will work.
Other Supplies
Scissors
Roll of tape or another circular object approximately 5" in diameter to trace around
Misting/spray bottle filled with water
Separate container of water for cleaning brushes
Paper towels
Gloves
Double-stick tape — optional
