Under Ancestral Skies

Class Opens July 16th
The expansive sky above us is the same one our ancestors admired centuries ago.
Countless lives have thrived beneath these skies, serving as a bridge between worlds. An abundance of wisdom hangs overhead, with cycles, rhythms, and storms guiding us each day. This serves as a gentle reminder to slow down and gaze upward.
In this class, we will reconnect with our roots and explore the celestial cycles while creating expressive skyscapes. We will examine the movement and illumination of clouds, learning how to capture their essence through paint. Our goal is to portray the ethereal beauty of horizon lines as they merge with the boundless sky above.
With moody palettes and bold, expressive brushstrokes, we will move away from a realistic depiction of the sky, embracing our own artistic flair.

What we will learn together…
Warmup Lesson - Exploring the Life of Clouds
Through our warmup lesson, we will explore the movements, depth, shape and light of clouds through painting. Clouds have a life and are constantly changing and evolving. Each can teach us a lesson in reflecting in our own lives. As we study and paint clouds, we will capture them with an expressive style as to reflect the ever-evolving nature. We will begin to work and mix paint colors to build and start to connect to our preferred color palettes.
Lesson 1 - Exploring the Connection with Birds
Throughout various cultures and historical periods, birds have served as bridges between worlds, acting as messengers between the earthly realm and the otherworldly. By observing these incredible creatures, one can't help but feel a profound sense of connection. Many of the same birds that soared through the skies during our ancestors’ time still grace us today.
In this lesson, we will engage and connect to birds by painting a feather of your choice. This experience focuses on exploring the texture, contrast, delicacy, and detail found in the objects surrounding you.
Lesson 2 - Exploring the In Between
The horizon line represents a space that bridges the earth and the vast beyond. In this lesson, we will connect with two different skyscapes, experimenting with various cloud shapes and painting techniques. By working on two scenes side by side, we can free ourselves of control.
We will dive deeper into composition, allowing the sky to take center stage in our artwork. By utilizing complementary colors and contrasting lights and darks, we will enhance the dramatic essence of our stormy scenes.
Lesson 3 - Dawn to Dusk
In this lesson, we will examine the varying shifts and changes in the sky and lighting as the day progresses. Each segment of the day presents us with fresh perspectives. The sun's location can impact the landscape and the sky. The light and color of mid-day can feel quite different compared to the hues of a sunset. We will dedicate some time to observing the sky and lighting and understanding how these transformations can influence our creative technique and color palettes. We will work through three small paintings from dusk to dawn to find our own style and transition throughout the day.
