An artist's mind is rarely at rest. There's always something worth looking at, some shape or color, finding inspiration in everything.
In Quiet Unfolding, Natalie Mecham invites you to look closely at the world around you and paint a fox portrait alongside her.
Join Natalie as she walks you through the techniques she returns to again and again, including how to paint fur without stiffening it, and how to bring out the personality in a wild animal's face.
Foxes carry their own quiet lessons. As a spirit animal, the fox is said to appear when you need to trust your instincts, move around an obstacle instead of forcing your way through it, and stay flexible when things shift. Natalie sees this as good guidance for watercolor itself, a medium that rarely rewards force.
You'll also see how she layers in other materials, building mixed media pieces full of vibrant color and texture.
This class welcomes all levels. If you're just beginning with watercolor, Natalie starts slowly and explains as she goes. If you've been painting for years, you'll find new techniques and a fresh way of seeing a familiar medium.
Join Natalie and paint a world full of wisdom and wonder.

LET ME TELL YOU MORE...
Warmup: Get to know your watercolors through play and experimenting
Natalie starts by showing how she practices techniques and tests new colors, treating each swatch as a small work of art in its own right. Building a vision board this way gives you a plan before you begin a larger piece, so you're not making every decision at once with a wet brush in hand. Fur intimidates a lot of painters. You'll paint a fox here, and by the end of it fur will feel far less daunting than it looked at the start.
Main Lesson: World of Wisdom and Wonder
In this lesson, Natalie shows you how to work from reference photos to build a magical landscape with a fox at its center, sharing the techniques she relies on for detail and texture. She has a fondness for taking an ordinary view and turning it into somewhere stranger and more wondrous, with colorful mountains and skies full of stars.
