The Gift of Discovery
I finally got around to doing some sketching yesterday! *Note to self: don’t assume you are going to have plenty of time to create art on a family beach vacation with two young children.* :) LOL! I have such idealistic (unrealistic) expectations sometimes!
Anyway, I began this portrait with the same worry, doubt and trepidation that I always do. I persisted, knowing the dance with my inner critic well. Then it dawned on me that it truly must begin this way each time for me. That, when I am discovering a new face and drawing from reference that I am, in fact, mapping out new terrain. New forms. Angles. Curves. Shadows and light.
I realized that if I am to truly observe this new face, that I must stay in an active state of discovery. To assume what comes next, to simply just draw an eye or a mouth (as my brain knows of them) and not SEE, is actually a departure from this state.
I found this comforting somehow - to accept the feeling of unknowing. To welcome it and stay in it. To allow, the tiny lines and marks I made on the page to evolve and build upon themselves until at last, an eye was discovered and then a nose and so on. To allow the process be the joy and not rush to the result. 💗
