What does it mean to truly notice a landscape, and to tell its story in your own visual language?
In Gathered Moments, you’ll be invited to slow down and connect with a landscape that feels meaningful to you. Through observation, collection, and creative response, you’ll explore how colours, sounds, textures, shifting light, and natural found objects can become a collection of expressive, personal artworks.
This class is rooted in nature journaling and evolves into an intuitive, poetic way of documenting your experience. You will take the time to notice, gather and express your experience of the land, whether that’s the coastline, the desert, the forest or even your own backyard. You’ll explore ways of collecting visual and sensory information, documenting and responding to your landscape in ways that feel natural to you.
Nicole will guide you in translating your surroundings into drawings, two kinds of prints, poetry and watercolour paintings, moving between realism and abstraction and teaching concrete skills in these media. She will show you how to curate your pieces into a cohesive, meaningful collection that reflects your experience of the land.
What is the story of your place?

What You’ll Learn in Class…
Warmup lesson: Gathering
Oyster shells crunch underfoot, seagulls feast on the coastal bounty, and eagles watch from the trees above as white feathers drift along the sand, carried by the ocean breeze.
In this warmup, Nicole will take you on a field trip to one of her favourite beaches near her home on Vancouver Island. As she shares the sights and sounds of the landscape that inspires her, you’ll be invited to find a place of your own that can become your inspiration spot.
With a sketchbook and camera in hand, you’ll begin the practice of gathering: noticing details, collecting imagery, and recording sensory impressions to bring back to your studio. These observations will become the foundation for your main project and the beginning of your own story of place.
MAIN LESSON: Composing Your Story
In the main lesson, you’ll transform your gathered observations into a series of small, tactile artworks using brown kraft and watercolour paper tags. Working on these tag surfaces, you’ll create a collection of drawings, black and white Gelli prints, texture prints, watercolour paintings, and poetry using all the inspiration from your particular landscape.
Nicole will guide you step by step through each process, showing you how to work intuitively while exploring a range of techniques. You’ll move between mark-making, printing, painting, and writing, allowing your materials and expressions to inform one another.
After you’ve created a collection of small artworks, you’ll curate and arrange them into one piece. Your tags will be displayed on a canvas, hung with miniature clothes pegs, creating a visual record of your time and place. You can think of each tiny artwork as one sentence in the story of your landscape, and together they represent your whole experience.
Bonus LESSON: Offering Gratitude
In the bonus lesson, Nicole will share a handful of prompts to help you revisit your landscape with intention and gratitude. You’ll create a small, impermanent piece that reflects your connection to the place and gently brings your experience to a close.
