Into the Realm of Fairytales
Welcome to Issue No. 48 of the Studioworks Journal! Today, I thought it might be lovely to dive into the world of fairytales! Why are they so prevalent in our culture? What kind of artists contributed to their popularity, and how can we be inspired by them?
Fairytales are laden with dark monsters, dreamy heroes and heroines, fantasy worlds, whimsical characters, moral lessons, tragedy, and of course happy endings, well, sometimes… I’m aware that many historical fairytales can be quite macabre but my intention is to stay on the lighter side!
Artists brought these tales to life with beautiful illustrations, etchings, paintings, and drawings, so let’s take a peek into this topic, reconnect to our favorite childhood stories, and make some fairytale art!

Crowned In Flowers With Ivy Newport
I’m so delighted to share this lesson with you. Originally created for Poetic Plaster & Wax, this piece is especially close to my heart. We’ll create a delicate female figure on smooth plaster, layering watercolor, pencil, acrylic, and textured stencil patterns. A final veil of encaustic wax gives her a soft, luminous finish. I even added a small poem to honor the piece’s poetic origins.
