Abstract landscapes

A mixed media class exploring beautiful images, textures, and colors.

Do you catch yourself looking at the sky and wondering, “How would I paint that?” Or maybe you’ve caught yourself standing in a sea of flowers or by the ocean and dreamed of capturing that beauty on canvas. The world is a fascinating place to explore through painting!

One of the techniques you will learn in this class will add nuance and mystery to your pieces. Using old maps, newspaper clippings, journal entries, magazine pictures, dictionary definitions and other flotsam and jetsam, you will build your background with mixed media to create depth and intrigue. We will also use palette knives and a different art tool that you probably have never thought could be used for making fine art (you’ll be surprised). I’m pulling out all of the stops and sharing with you my secrets for painting compelling and powerful abstract landscapes and seascapes. And it will be a lot of fun — because that’s how creating should be.

What we will learn together…

Warmup Lesson : ELIDA’S FAB FIVE

Before I dive into any painting, I always start by blending my colors. I’ve created “Elida’s Fab Five Mixing Chart” for you to follow along. This is your mixing Bible and will be referred to throughout each painting that we do. The more comfortable you are with mixing, the more efficient and accomplished painter you’ll become.

Lesson 1 : POPPIES AT SUNSET

In this painting lesson, you will learn how to blend your acrylics to make a soothing sunset. We then will build the rest of the painting, working from the farthest objects away and moving forward. We will finish this piece by adding the poppies. You’ll learn how to make a sea of poppies disappear in the distance and how to use your palette knife with gel mediums and heavy-bodied paints to create the bold texture in the foreground.

Lesson 2 : TRAVELeR’S WINDY ROAD

Do you ever save maps, brochures, plane tickets, sales tags etc. from your travels? I can’t resist tucking away mementos from where I’ve visited. Instead of feeling guilty for ignoring minimalists’ advice and throwing them away, reframe them as art material. By using old maps or other artifacts as the foundation of the painting, you’ll create the ultimate element of surprise! In this lesson, I will show you how to collage your papers onto your canvas as the backdrop of a meandering road landscape. You’ll learn how to seal your images so that when you paint over the top, they don’t get covered up. You’ll also learn how to use perspective while making the road with its twists and turns. In the end, viewers will want to jump right into your painting and discover where it leads!

Lesson 3 :  ABSTRACT SEA & SKY

Skies can be a daunting subject to paint but, once you learn a few tricks, they are lots of fun and, wow, what an impact they make in a painting. By using molding paste and a unique tool, you’ll learn my process of creating some dramatic clouds and a stunning sky. You’ll also learn how to paint the sea/ocean in a way that compliments the sky without competing. Finding the right balance in the painting is important and I’m confident that your painting will be the perfect duo!

Bonus lesson :  Protecting YOUR PAINTING

It’s important to seal your painting especially if it will be in direct sunlight, but I’ve also struggled with finding a spray that doesn’t dull my painting's colors or cause them to run. Check out how I combat that issue and still get the archival quality finish that I want.

Who is this class for?

I can teach those who only draw stick figures, so this class is for you. Whether you have never painted before or are a seasoned artist, you’ll feel supported every step of the way. HERE ARE JUST A FEW EXAMPLES OF elida'S WORK

SUPPLIES LIST

If you have any acrylic paints, brushes, paper plates and canvases, those will work! Investing in my “Fab Five” acrylic paints makes the mixing part easier and gives you a great foundation for future painting classes, but they aren’t required.

A great way to save money over time is to purchase value packs of canvases that you can use for future classes. The sizes I used for these pieces were 12”x12”, 11”x14”, and 20”x 20.” Decide which sizes work best for you.

Note: if you want the same acrylics I will be teaching with, Utrecht brand paints are Blicks only.

Canvases:

Paint Brushes:

I usually start with three brushes but this set comes with five. Bonus! Make sure you have:

Acrylic Paints: Utrecht Studio Acrylic Paints

These are great paints with the best value for your dollar. I also love the Utrecht Artists Colors, but they are more expensive. I use these every day and then supplement with Golden paint for that extra pop of color. These are my “Fab Five” (plus white)

 Bonus Colors:

Paper Palettes:

Conte Crayons These are great to draw on the canvas easily. They can blend with water and are easy to paint over.

Stabilo pencils are great for drawing on surfaces without leaving a permanent mark.

Modeling paste This product is used as a foundation, creating texture on the abstract sea and sky painting.

Gloss gel medium This product can be mixed in with paint for a heavy-bodied acrylic or use it as a glue in collage.

Aquavar can only be bought through Georgie’s Ceramics. If you are doing a lot of collage and mixed media, I would suggest just buying a gallon from them directly. It’s inexpensive and will last for a lot of painting projects. It can also be used as a sealer.

Palette Knives Set of Three Any set of palette knives will work, but this is a great starter set to see which style you like.

Finishing Spray  For matte finish, I still use the gloss first, let it dry and then spray the matte over the top.

Shur-line Handi Painter You should be able to find this or something like this at any store that carries paints. Hardware stores usually have them and Home Depot and Lowe’s carry them in a lot of different shapes and sizes. I use them for a lot of my paintings. They are inexpensive and great for blending and blocking in colors.
