What we will learn together…

Lesson 1 : Discovering Scotland

When I research a country, I look to many places for information. I love reading travel blogs, talking to friends and family that have traveled to the country if I have not myself, reading travel and history books on the country, watching videos, touring art museum sites and so much more. I try to find any way possible to immerse myself into the country from afar. You can find some of our reference articles and books under our resources page in our classroom, travel tips and photos on our Pinterest board, royalty-free photographs on our Unsplash board, and just a few of the many videos on Scotland I watched linked below to inspire your work throughout the class. I hope you enjoy this beautiful country as much as I have!

lesson 2 : Place to Place

One way I like to explore a country from afar is to discover the architecture within the cities. This gives us a sense of the history as well as the influences on the country and culture. Quick sketches and paintings of the local buildings are a perfect way to connect whether you are traveling throughout the country or studying it from afar. We will study the architecture through these lessons while drawing and painting. Through these lessons, we will dive into perspective, composition, mark making, mixed media and linework.

Lesson 3 : The People & Stories

The people and culture are what make a country different from one place to the next. Through these lessons, we will discuss some of the symbolism, traditions, stories, legends and myths that make Scotland well...Scotland. Each country is unique and it is its people that truly make it different. We will work through an expressionist portrait, mixed media art journals and layers on watercolor paper while connecting to the people and faces of Scotland..

Lesson 4 : Enchanting Wildlife

Through these lessons we will connect to the wildlife of Scotland. We will explore flora and fauna in our art journal with studies in pen and paint and create expressionistic vibrant paintings of the Highland coo or cows local to the area.

lesson 5 : The Land of Scotland

It is time to be inspired by the incredible lands of Scotland. From the coastal regions to the Highlands this country is seeped in natural beauty. The diverse terrain means there is something to inspire each and every one of us. You can chose to follow along with the same photographs used in these lessons or select locations that inspire you to follow along with our mini landscape studies or are larger landscape painting. By working on mini landscapes first, we can loosen up and connect to our color palattes before diving into larger pieces on panel or canvas.
