An Angel's Wing

Hello there! What have you been up to? Art seems to be pouring out of me and I can't stop it! Nor do I want to! Working on the 100 faces project has really been very inspiring and I'm learning SO much!

I do love creating faces but it was nice this week to take a break from eyes, noses and mouths and work on a different piece for a dear friend...

Remember this one?

Well...it got a little makeover...

My friend had me add an Angel's wing to it...a brilliant idea!

Then we had to have a little fun...Screen Shot 2014-11-19 at 7.08.25 PM

I was stunned to find that the wing fit her perfectly. So sweet!

And then she took it home and put it right back up over the mantel. :)

She loves it so much more now and I do too! I'm thinking I might have to do "Wing" series of works.

What have you been working on lately?

Life lately...

Hello there! Oh my goodness, it's been a tough couple of weeks! My little Claire bear is just now getting over pneumonia. Poor baby...and well...poor Mama. We were both sick of being cooped up so it was fantastic to take her to daycare yesterday and see how happy she was to run into the classroom and play with her wee friends. I started the day (childfree) with a trip to the nail salon for a quick, Spring manicure! My hands were trashed from constantly washing them! It's amazing what a coat of pretty nail polish can do to lift your spirit! ;)

Anyway, as you can imagine, I haven't had much time to paint or do anything really BUT thank goodness for my iPad because it's so easy to reach for it and create something minus the setup/cleanup. Here are a couple of digital collages I made this past week...

Absolutely love creating on the app - Procreate! Such fun! Oh, and I just splurged on a new pressure sensitive stylus. I highly recommend it!

A couple of other things to share with you...I just received the most gorgeous necklace from my jewelry designer friend.

Screen Shot 2014-03-14 at 12.35.10 PM

It's a beautiful piece of lapis lazuli and it resembles a dreamy piece of the starlit sky! I adore it! Thank you Amy!

I also finally got a bracelet from Becky at Farm Girl Paints on Etsy! It reminds me to keep my head up and live courageously - not easy for this girl - who tends to back away from scary or intimidating situations...

Screen Shot 2014-03-14 at 12.35.28 PM

Oh and I did a little Spring cleaning in my studio! I'm hoping to start creating more frequently now that both kids are healthy!

Screen Shot 2014-03-14 at 12.34.01 PM(I spy a sleepy kitty.) ;)

And....lastly...a little glimpse of Spring blossoms popping in my neighborhood. Such a beautiful time of year!

I hope you are all healthy and happy! Enjoy your weekend!

Much love,

Art Night

Hello! How's it going? Hope all is well in your world. My family enjoyed Halloween and now we are on the fast track to Christmas. This time of year always seems to zip by doesn't it? Many months ago, I imagined myself hosting an art night. A small gathering. Maybe 6-8 women, around my dining table, all creating. The idea both thrilled and terrified me. I talked about it with several friends and received gentle encouragement to do it. So finally, it happened. A couple of weeks ago, I sent out invites and began the planning of what this night would look like. I wanted to provide lots of fun art supplies, an inspiring atmosphere, delicious snacks and wine, of course!

My formal dining room is rarely used so it was a delight to move right in and create a playful, creative space! Stringing up bits of colorful ribbon in my crystal chandelier gave the room a whimsical feel!

art night1

I covered up the table in brown craft paper and draped the dining chairs in vintage bed sheets that I found at Goodwill.

To provide a little more structure for those that wanted it, I set up a still life in the center of the table.

and spread out inspiring art books...

Each lovely lady got a journal with their initial on it and a pencil as a little gift from me. I love having lots of pretty journals around to jot down thoughts and ideas.

A colorful, vintage tray and a bouquet of vibrant flowers in the corner created a sweet little wine bar. The guests each brought a bottle of something to share.

Once the table was set, it was time for me to pull out all my art supplies and display them for my guests! The ART BAR was born!

Then came the food! My dear friend Katie is an amazing cook and she volunteered to do all the food for the evening! LOVE HER! She did an incredible job...creating a 98% gluten-free spread of delectable dishes! (I apologize for the dark quality of the pictures...my low-light photography skills need work!)

This creamy brie, drizzled with a warm brown sugar, butter and walnut sauce was a huge hit!

These gluten-free cookies and pumpkin cake were completely addictive too!

As the night began and my guests mingled and delighted in all the gorgeous food, I could feel the butterflies in my stomach begin to settle.

Once everyone had a plate of food and a glass of wine, the ladies took their seats and I spoke (rambled) about the intention of the night and why I had wanted to do this. My heart-felt desire was to bring women together, to connect, share, grow, create and maybe even try something new. Art can really freak grown-ups out and I want to start breaking that down. I believe art is for everyone and that it is NOT about the product but the process. I believe Art can be healing, transformative and teach us a lot about ourselves. I believe that creating is something we are hard-wired to do.

After I briefly explained the different art supplies, the ladies bravely got straight to it. I was so worried that someone would become overwhelmed and shut down but nope, these girls boldly experimented and began creating! I was honored to look up from my place and be surrounded by these women who were all willing to be vulnerable with me and get outside their box.

art table 2

There were several moments that night when the room fell silent. At a dinner party...that could be a disaster but at an art night...it was magical. Everyone was in their zone; concentrating, relaxing and centered in their creation. Loved that!

All in all, it was a wonderful night! I can't wait to do it again! Next time, I would like to guide everyone through a specific collage/mixed media project! I truly learned a lot about myself by doing this. I was scared but sharing my passion with others was so worth all the nerves. Thank you to my incredibly gracious guests for being so open and supportive of me. And of course a HUGE thank you to Katie for all the outstanding treats!

I highly recommend trying this out with your friends, family and neighbors. Gather up all those art supplies, share and explore your creativity!

I'm dreaming of...

Hi there. How's life treating you? We are back into the swing of school around here and I'm trying to get organized and make the most of each day. Not easy. I often find myself being pulled in so many directions that I get overwhelmed. So, I retreat into my own little daydreams. Highly productive. Not. We have been renting a beautiful home in a fabulous neighborhood but it's been three years and I'm getting itchy feet! Growing up, I lived in 10 different houses and two countries (the U.S. & Australia). When Chris and I got together, we moved 5 times in 4 years. Finally, we settled in Portland and have lived here for almost 11 years. No wonder I'm getting wanderlust!

Moving is in my blood and I'm totally dreaming of us buying a large piece of land and building a sweet farmhouse. I want a big porch, an old barn for my art studio, chickens (why not?) and a large, white kitchen, where I would bake bread and make delicious meals. Realistic? Probably not, I don't even bake - but wow, does it sound good to me right now. I'm being drawn to wide open spaces, quiet, solitude, a slower pace. A place to focus and create. Sometimes life just feels so noisy. Know what I mean?

So in my procrastination, I pulled my favorite farmhouse images from my Pinterest board to share my vision with you...

Have a beautiful afternoon.

Rainbow Rooms

Every interior magazine I pick up lately, seems to be talking about the come back of color! Splashes of bold 80's inspired hues have creeped back into vogue - thankfully balanced with more modern styling. I thought it would be fun to do a spread of Rainbow rooms. So here goes...

Pretty bold huh? If you could pick an eye-poping color for one of your rooms what would it be?

p.s. want more colorful ideas check out this great article via here.

I heart this space.

Happy Thursday...Friday is almost here. I couldn't wait to post pics of this simply stunning living and dining room! This masterpiece was created by The Brooklyn Home Company. They have some serious talent. Enjoy this little peek inside one of their projects but to see more check out their portfolio.

If a gorgeous French woman married a famous explorer this is what their house would look like...

To me, it's such a unique and lovely blend. Rustic and elegant. Refined but yet, natural. It's rare I see a room where I love every element! I love the dark leather chair paired with the light linen couch. I love the naturalist prints and wildlife elements. I love the cream moldings and those mirrors. Oh man, those mirrors make me crazy. I love the way the glass and brass tables add a touch of sparkle and light. I could go on and on...and I do...

I seriously love this place, I mean how perfect is that gorgeous French chair next to the rustic stump table?  And all the crystal decanters, they add such glamor...don't even get me started on the wide plank, mocha wood floors...

The dining is also so lovely. The artwork is playful without being over the top and I want those chairs and the bench and the table.

You know what, why don't I just move in?

Excuse the rambling...I am just so struck by this place.

Okay, deep breath...

What are your favorite design styles?

Snow day

If you've been reading my blog, you know that we have had many false predictions of snow this winter...much to my disappointment. But today, we finally got the white stuff! We woke up to a winter wonderland and I quickly got dressed and ran outside with Grace to take pictures...

Grace was reluctant to model for me, but for the bribe of two Hershey kisses she did a fabulous job!

Hope you are having a beautiful day where you are too! Snow or not.

Hints of Spring by Suzanne Kasler

After living in Portland for eight years, you come to realize that, at times, January and February flirt with Spring like conditions...but, like always, the rain has resumed. As the gray closes in, I found myself drawn to the lovely interiors created by Suzanne Kasler. I really love the soft, pastel hues in these rooms...reminding me of the first blooms of Spring...

So soothing to the eye...I could look at her rooms all day - imagine living in one! I wish!

To view her amazing portfolio of work check out her site.

Hope you are seeing signs of Spring where you are!

Etsy Love: Cloth and Patina

As many of you know, Etsy is home to a vast array of amazing vintage and handmade goods. Sometimes you feel overwhelmed by the sheer yumminess of it. At least, I do... There are days when I visit Etsy and right there on the home page, something stands out and grabs my attention. Today, a little shop called Cloth and Patina did that for me.

The store's owner is an obvious treasure hunter, like myself and I found myself drooling over some of her finds. I really appreciate how she re-invents some these found objects...like this gorgeous frame.

or these tiny tart tins. They make adorable magnets don't they?

This little glass apple is so precious. I want one.

I love the silver shimmer of these vintage glasses. Hard to resist...

This little kitty....what does he do? Well...he holds your glasses! haha! This one made me giggle. I'm always losing my glasses!

He looks smarter right?

Her treasures are many, but at the end of the day these little guys (salt and pepper shakers) went home with me...

Yes, I know. I'm a bird freak.

Go check out her beautiful selections for yourself. I'm sure you will find a sweet trinket that you just have to have!

Do you enjoy treasure hunting? Antiquing? Garage sales? What was your best find?

Dreamy Whites - a new blog to love

Hello there. I hope your Sunday has been relaxing. I just discovered a new blog - Dreamy Whites - via Houzz (an online interior design source), that I'm completely in love with. Maria is the author of this delightful blog and is one talented lady!  She magically finds time to juggle five kids, a husband and a beautiful ranch home while expressing herself creatively through interior design, photography and graphic design! Can you say Super Woman?

Oh, and her home is being featured in this book, by Fifi O'Neill (who also has an amazing blog) ! Just added it to my wishlist!

Her style, photography and writing resonated with me...so I had to share! Check out these pics of her lovely home...

Gorgeous right!? Her rooms feel so dreamy and romantic. One day I hope my home can be this enchanting!

Wall Wonders

I've got these big blank walls in my house. Still. It's sad, really. I know I should be brave but I'm scared of hanging the wrong thing. Big...I need big, expensive, beautiful artwork - at least that's what I keep telling myself.

"I'm so boring!"  the walls seem to scream at me.

Okay, walls. You win. I will fix your blankness. But first, I need inspiration!

Wow, I feel so much better! I love all these ideas and I really LOVE that I don't need to run out and buy huge pieces of artwork. This curated, collaged look is much more interesting! How cute are those little plates floating up from that vintage stove?

Oh and it's not out yet, but I've added this book to my Amazon wish-list!

Are your walls blank too? I hope this gave you some ideas! If you love it, hang it up! A card, a poster, a gorgeous tag, a beautiful image from your favorite magazine...whatever. Your walls can be your very own composition! Your very own gallery! Have fun with it!

I'm going to be working on my blank walls and I will share my "installations" once they are up!

Have a inspired Friday!

A New Member of the Family

After losing our dear cat, Sydney in early December we sorely missed the presence of a furball in our home...so...I trotted down to CAT (The Cat Adopotion Team) and adopted a sweet kitten, originally named Hickory. I thought I would share the story of our meeting... Upon walking into the Kitten Room of the shelter, one could NOT miss the tiny white and black kitty desperately scaling the walls of his cage, while meowing with all his might!

"Oh boy"  I thought, "That one looks like trouble!"

I gave him a finger pat on the head and moved on to the sleepy, quiet kittens.

"Meeeooooooow!!! Meeeeeooooow!!!!"

Hickory was hard to ignore. I couldn't help but feel bad for the little guy. I put my finger between the bars and he grabbed on with both tiny paws, bringing it to his face. A loud purr began. Cute. Very cute.

But..... I withdrew my hand and went back to looking at the more mellow cats.

CLANG! BANG!

Hickory had once again climbed the sides of the cage, but this time he had knocked over his metal water bowl.

"MEEEEEOOOOOWWWW!!!!" he yelled at me, like it was my fault.

Okay! Okay! I told the adoption consultant that I would visit one on one with Hickory in the "meeting" room. Once in my arms he scrambled up to my neck , gave me a few head butts and curled up under my chin. He sounded like a little engine with that purr!

Smiling like a fool, I carried him into the room and sat cross-legged on the floor. He unfurled himself, jumped from my arms, pounced on an invisible speck on the ground, ran circles around the room, leaped over a chair and then hopped back into my lap...head butted me again...and then off he went on his circuit of adventure around the room. Every few seconds he would check back in with me, head butt, purr and then back to his kitten antics. He put on quite a show. I found myself laughing out loud. I liked this little guy. Trouble...yeah maybe, but he looked confident and playful, perfect for dealing with a four-year old. Dear old Syd, had been terrified of Grace and we rarely saw her during the day.

For good measure, I visited with three or four other kittens but while they were all adorable, they didn't have the personality that Hickory did.

Half an hour later, I was driving home with him. His eyes closed, purring with contentment. He had gotten his way.

Hickory, now renamed Toby, has made an amazing addition to the family. He is so sweet and loving. Playful and patient with Grace (and all the neighborhood kids who visited him). We couldn't be happier with our new little fur baby.  He had a blast with everyone over Christmas! Thought I would share some of the photos...

He loves to "help" Grace color...

He surely wasn't going to miss Christmas dinner...

and unwrapping presents was a highlight...as was scaling the Christmas tree...TOBY!!!!

The best part of having Toby in our life - Grace has a new best friend...

Hello my beautiful tree.

After a teary eyed day, picking up all Sydney's toys and cleaning out her food bowl...I needed something pretty to work on...something to cheer me up. On Saturday, Chris brought home the most beautiful tree for us. It's our first real tree! I haven't had one since I was a kid. The whole house smells amazing!

I set to work decorating it...

I kept it super simple using only silver and white ornaments and paper snowflakes. Instead of a star I crowned the tree with sparkling branches.  It was an honor to adorn such a grand tree and I often just sit in the living room and smile up at it. I'm still missing my kitty but this gorgeous house guest brightened my day. Thank you tree.

Have you decorated your tree yet? How did you do it?

I heart Canvas

Just discovered a new home design store named Canvas, that opened in New York City's SoHo neighborhood. Their goods are stunning. Simple, modern and timeless. Here's the big plus - their items are sustainable, ethically sourced and many are created by artisans in developing countries.  Canvas' founder, Andrew Corrie, sits on the Aid to Artisans Board  - an amazing non-profit organization leading a handmade revolution, while supporting artists and strengthening communities around the world! You gotta love that.

Check out the eye candy...

I need this chair. Seriously, I do.

So beautiful, right? And good for the planet! It's a win-win!

Have a fabulous Friday.

All wrapped up...

To be honest, I'm not the best at wrapping gifts. In fact, I usually let my super perfectionist hubby do it. He has a way with paper and creases...me...not so much. I end up squashing down the ends, slapping some tape on and calling it good.

However - I am a newly evolved, crafty, inspired person compared to the Ivy of Christmas past, SO this year I'm going to really try. Really.

I went on the hunt for inspiration and finding it via this down-under mag comes as no surprise - Aussies are geniuses after all! Look at all the pretties!

Gorgeous right? I can only hope to achieve such results. But hoping is good...

How do you like to wrap up your goodies? Any tricks or tips to share? Trust me I need em'.

Cabin Couture

I've always been a sucker for a cozy cabin in the winter...but this home takes it to a whole new level and I'm all for it! Check out this sumptuous space - a lovely balance between rustic and elegant.

Don't you love those shots of royal purple? I do.

Bundle me up...I don't care how cold it is, I'm going to sit out here and drink wine!

I want that bed and that chaise...

Pure brilliance here - these bunk beds are perfect for the kids.

And of course after being a snow bunny all day, you'll need to defrost in this stunning tub.

Don't you wish you could spend your winter days in this space? Yum.

Okay...well, I have a sick husband and a hungry daughter so I best get back to my day job. Hope you enjoyed this beautiful home.

My first show...

My feet were very mad at me today. Wearing 3-inch heels for 7 hours straight is not on my list of skills anymore...however all the aches and pains of today were worth it! The trunk show was so lovely and so rewarding! This was my first big event for Grace & Ivy and having it at my home made me all the more nervous. Thank goodness for my wonderful new friends, who encouraged me and supported me all the way through! The day was very chilly, with some rain but inside it was nice and cozy. We had a fire burning, mulled cider on the stove, elegant holiday music playing and plenty of decadent sweets to share with our guests! Our little shop was open for business and it wasn't long before we got quite busy. At first, I felt quite hesitant but the butterflies left my stomach as I began to chat with our shoppers. I found a wonderful feeling of connection with them. I got to answer questions, share my story and assist my customers with their selections. It was quite a high! The best compliment was to observe our guests making themselves at home by the fire and chatting with new people. Everyone felt comfortable - they wanted to hang out! I loved it!

So you know me...I had to take several pics...some are blurry...forgive me...but I had to share with you.

Don't you love the snowflakes? We all made a bunch and then incorporated them into the decorations. Great idea Amy!

Jen brought these beautiful turquoise, vintage bottles for the mantel. Love them!

Setting up... Up front you can see Barbara's gorgeous t-shirts and baby wear!

My little table! I had samples out of my brown sugar scrub and the body butters. My new vanilla-ginger body butter was a sure favorite and sold out fast!

(It's so new that it's not even on my Etsy site yet. So if you want one just shoot me an email!)

I got a little obsessed dressing the table. My husband cut me off after I hand drew the tiny stars on the paper trees...

I tried to make the best of my poor old brass chandelier by adorning it with a wreath of greens and our delicate little snowflakes.

All in all, it was a fantastic day. Thank you so much to everyone who came and supported us. We so appreciate it!!

Have a lovely Monday. I'm hoping for a snow day!

xo,

p.s. Also sending out a big thank you to Matt, Jen's husband, who provided us with lovely jazz music into the evening hours!

Inspired by Sibella Court

Hi Friends! Hope you had a decent Monday. Ours was very rainy but a trip to the antique stores with a dear friend made it a perfect day! You may have seen on my other blog, that I posted a curated collection of images by Sibella Court. Well, her book - Etcetera: Creating Beautiful Interiors with the things you love - arrived and I couldn't help but take pictures of it. It's so beautiful!!

Really, you must have this book. It's a treasure trove of inspiration. I promise.

Have a lovely Tuesday!
